Carterton District Council has secured a 42-hectare site on Norfolk Road for the proposed Waingawa Water Storage Project, marking a major step toward boosting water resilience in our region.
The project is budgeted at $25 million (including a $5M local contribution), and would support water-intensive industries in the Waingawa Industrial Area, enable higher-value agricultural production, and increase climate resilience.
The planned reservoir will initially hold between 500,000 to 1 million m³ of water, with further expansion potential in future phases.
This initiative complements the recent opening of the Waingawa Process Water Plant, and underscores the importance of water security for the prosperity of Wairarapa’s food, fibre, and industrial sectors.
